Religion needs sin to exist?

Without the concept of ‘sin’ ‘salvation’ and ‘redemption’, would there be a need for religion? Would it be as popular?

It is a simple equation of supply and demand. Convincing people that they need something; i.e. you NEED religion because you HAVE sin.

Without a fear of hell, or other negative consequences linked to sin, would religion be necessary?

Granted, a moral code for coexisting in society will always be necessary. However, without the concept of sin, would not a secular code be just as effective?

Creation of fear (through sin) is the main tool for religion? No?

Is this why such philosophies as existentialism are/were viewed as so dangerous by the Church? Existentialism teaches that the only sin one can commit is to act outside of one’s nature, which is basically impossible to do, as acts create nature. Thus, sin is impossible, rendering religion useless?
I love being criticized for thinking too much…

There are cultures thot hold a religous point of view that focus less on sin and more on enlightenment. Some even focus more on being one with nature. People look to religon to establish meaning and purpose to thier lives. Now,a religon that seeks political power and control may focus on HELL and damanation if an individual does not stay in line.
Now the concept of TABOO is a lot like sin. A Taboo defines what behavior is acceptable and not acceptable. Taboos have gone down through the ages and reflects the different values and mores of a particular culture.

Religon reflects a culture more than anything. And many religons seek to control behavior to maintain political power. So sin may be no more than a broken taboo. To make ammends the religon allow for forgivenss.
